NZ Parcel Boundaries Wireframe provides a map of land, road and other parcel boundaries, and is especially useful for displaying property boundaries.

This map service is for visualisation purposes only and is not intended for download. You can download the full parcels data from the NZ Parcels dataset.

This map service provides a dark outline and transparent fill, making it perfect for overlaying on our basemaps or any map service you choose.

Data for this map service is sourced from the NZ Parcels dataset which is updated weekly with authoritative data direct from LINZ’s Survey and Title system. Refer to the NZ Parcel layer for detailed metadata.

To simplify the visualisation of this data, the map service filters the data from the NZ Parcels layer to display parcels with a status of 'current' only.

This map service has been designed to be integrated into GIS, web and mobile applications via LINZ’s WMTS and XYZ tile services. View the Services tab to access these services.

See the LINZ website for service specifications and help using WMTS and XYZ tile services and more information about this service.

This dataset was last updated on LINZ Data Service on 03 Feb 2019.

This layer has been provided to enable potential users to identify the coverage of photography for Mainland NZ flown on behalf of the Crown between 1936 and 2005. It shows the extent of each photograph taken from the CROWN archive.

Historic Aerial Photos, Survey Footprints, CROWN (1936-2005) shows the extent of each CROWN survey undertaken.

Some photos from the NZAM archive may also appear in this layer. The Historic Aerial Photos, Survey Footprints, NZAM (1939-2008) shows the extent of each NZAM survey undertaken

See The Crown historic aerial photo archive scanning project for information about the scanning project.

How to Access Photos:
The photos are not downloadable from the LINZ Data Service.

Scanned photos from the partner regions may be viewed and downloaded from Retrolens.

The Crown Aerial Film Negative Collection is managed for LINZ by WSP Opus International. For photos not scanned yet, you can order images from the Collection from Opus NZ in a number of formats, including:

  • contact prints
  • enlargements
  • digital files
  • precision scans for photogrammetric production
  • orthophotos

You will need to tell Opus International the survey, run and photo number (values in the ‘SURVEY’ 'RUN' and 'PHOTO_NO' attributes) covering your area of interest.
Opus NZ will be able to provide information about the cost of providing images in the various formats. Contact them at: photosales@opus.co.nz or 0800 680 690

There are also a large number of images which previously belonged to New Zealand Aerial Mapping and which are now are available for public use. Historic Aerial Photos, Survey Footprints, NZAM (1939-2008) shows the extent of each survey undertaken. You can order these photos by contacting Opus NZ.

This layer provides the latest bearing (direction) and/or distance for cadastral boundaries.

When a cadastral survey is undertaken the relationship between boundary and non-boundary marks is ascertained or measured.
• This commonly is in the form or a vector (bearing and distance), but occasionally just one component.
• Some relationships are defined as arcs. In this data layer, the arc length is recorded in the distance field and a separate record holds the chord.

Only observations that have been captured in Landonline are available. This includes vectors that were re-captured in the Survey Capture Areas from survey plans lodged prior to Landonline and all survey observations since.

This layer provides metadata about cadastral surveys along with reference points indicating the location of the survey.

A cadastral survey determines and describes the spatial extent (including boundaries) of interest of land within New Zealand. Each survey is allocated a unique reference number (that prior to Landonline included reference to the land district.

This data provides details that identify the type of survey, the purpose, description and key dates relating to the survey.

This layer provides the current non-primary parcel polygons (e.g. easements) and some associated descriptive data that details the appellation (legal description), purpose, and size.

A non-primary parcel is a portion of land that that essentially enables the transfer of some rights to another i.e. usually limits the exclusive rights that would normally be associated with a primary parcel.

Non primary parcels include the following examples:
• an easement, including an esplanade strip or an access strip
• a covenant
• a lease or an area associated with a lease
• a licence or a permit area
• a unit or common property for the purposes if the Unit Titles Act 1972
• a moveable marginal strip
• a roadway or a restricted roadway that is an encumbrance over a primary parcel

If you require approved or historic parcels see the All Parcels Layer

This layer has a nominal accuracy of 0.1-1m in urban areas and 1-100m in rural areas. For more detailed information about parcel accuracies please refer to the Survey Boundary Marks layer which contains accuracies for each parcel node.

The combination of this layer with the primary parcels layer provides all spatially available current parcels for New Zealand (i.e. excludes historic and pending parcels and non-primary parcels that have not been spatially captured in Landonline).

The originating data for parcel/title associations includes some non-official sources where the official data does not support a link. For more information see

The Place Names Gazetteer contains official and unofficial place names under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB). Official place names are those that have been assigned, altered, adopted, approved, and validated under the NZGB Act 2008 or through other statutes that assign official names, for example, Treaty settlement legislation. Unofficial place names are those that have not been processed under the NZGB Act 2008 or through other relevant statutes.

Data is extracted from Land Information New Zealand’s (LINZ) ‘New Zealand Gazetteer of Official Geographic Names’, which is maintained by the NZGB Secretariat.

Geographical coverage encompasses New Zealand, the Ross Dependency of Antarctica, and the Continental Shelf of New Zealand.

The NZGB has naming jurisdiction over:

  • natural features such as mountains, peaks, valleys, glens, forests, lagoons, swamps, creeks, streams, rivers, fords, lakes, glaciers or ice features, bays, islands or harbours (including man-made features of the same type)

  • railways or railway stations, but not railway features such as marshalling yards, transfer sites, or track point locations

  • places, i.e. cities, towns, villages, sites, areas, or similar places, including suburbs and localities

  • undersea features

  • Crown protected areas

  • Districts and regions (altering only if requested by the local authority)

Each name is provided with a location represented by a point. More complex geometry (e.g lines for rivers or areas for suburbs) is not currently available.

Each geographic feature has one or more place names associated with it. Place names usually comprise two components – ‘specific’, being for the proper noun, and ‘generic’, being a description of the geographic feature type.

Information provided for each place name may include: name; name status (whether official or unofficial); geographic feature type; authority by which an official name became official; district within which the name is located; geographic location; reference information; history/origin/meaning; and additional notes. Not all information is available for all names.

Positional accuracy is generally the same as 1:50K mapping. Information accuracy reflects information at the time of original capture.
