This index enables you to identify the freely available georeferenced TIFF images of sounding sheets held by LINZ for the Antarctic (Ross Dependency) coastal area. Some of these sounding sheets date back to the 1950s. The polygons comprising the index show the extent of each original hard copy sheet - not just the soundings shown on the sheet. The attributes attached to each polygon will enable you to view, amongst other attributes, the date and scale of the bathymetric data shown on the sounding sheet.

Please refer to the LINZ Bathymetric Index Data Dictionary for further information about the attributes of this dataset.

The georeferenced TIFF images are not downloadable from the LINZ Data Service.

Requests for sounding sheets should be sent to hydro@linz.govt.nz with "Hydro Bathy Data" in the subject line. Requests must, as a minimum, specify the id, chart_no and serial_no as shown in the attributes attached to each polygon representing the sounding sheets of interest.

This dataset is a collection of individual hydrographic charts for the approaches to New Zealand, and has been designed to provide a quick way to group, view and/or download charts within this region.

Note: This set contains charts at a variety of scales. Use of LDS web map tile services for this set is not recommended as the scaled charts overlap.

All charts are available for individual download through the LINZ Data Service, and will be updated as new data becomes available.

These charts are based on the official Raster Navigational Chart series produced by the New Zealand Hydrographic Authority, available on the LINZ website.

A beacon is a prominent, specially constructed object forming a conspicuous mark as a fixed aid to navigation or for use in hydrographic survey. A cardinal beacon is used in conjunction with the compass to indicate where the mariner may find the best navigable water.
