This dataset was first added to LINZ Data Service on 22 Feb 2018.

This dataset provides a seamless cloud-free 10m resolution satellite imagery layer of the New Zealand mainland and offshore islands.

The imagery was captured by the European Space Agency Sentinel-2 satellites between December 2016 - December 2017.

We want your feedback
Data has been made available by LINZ on a pilot basis to help LINZ assess the value of ongoing release of satellite imagery.

This data will be updated once a year, during the term of the 2-year pilot.

Technical specifications
It comprises 450 x ortho-rectified RGB GeoTIFF images in NZTM projection, tiled into the LINZ Standard 1:50,000 tile layout.

  • Satellite sensors: ESA Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B
  • Acquisition dates: December 2016 - December 2017
  • Spectral resolution: R, G, B
  • Spatial resolution: 10 meters
  • Radiometric resolution: 8-bits (downsampled from 12-bits)

This is a visual product only. The data has been downsampled from 12-bits to 8-bits, and the original values of the images have been modified for visualisation purposes.

When New Zealand Aerial Mapping (NZAM) went into liquidation in September 2014, LINZ took ownership of their historic archive, and these photos are now available to the public.

This layer has been provided to enable potential users to identify the coverage of aerial photography for Mainland NZ flown by NZAM for private contract work between 1939 and 2008. These surveys compliment the Historic Aerial Photos, Survey Footprints, CROWN (1936-2005) layer which is currently being scanned.

If you are aware of any inaccuracies, please contact LINZ: info@linz.govt.nz or +64 4 4600110. The layer shows the approximate bounding box of each aerial survey undertaken.

How to Access Photos:
The Collection exists as photographic negatives which are not in digital form so the images are not downloadable.

The Collection is managed for LINZ by WSP Opus International. You can order images from the Collection from Opus NZ in a number of formats, including:

  • contact prints
  • enlargements
  • digital files
  • precision scans for photogrammetric production
  • orthophotos

You will need to tell Opus NZ the survey number (the value in the ‘survey’ attribute) covering your area of interest and the name of the survey.

Opus NZ will be able to provide information about the cost of providing images in the various formats. Contact them at: photosales@opus.co.nz or 0800 680 690

There are a small number of surveys that have not been referenced in the LDS layers due to incomplete metadata. Opus NZ will be able to let you know if additional photographs are available in your area of interest.

Imagery was captured for the ‘Hastings District Council’ by Aerial Surveys Ltd, Unit A1, 8 Saturn Place, Albany,0632, New Zealand.

Data comprises:
•2,761ortho-rectified RGB GeoTIFF images in NZTM projection, tiled into the LINZ Standard 1:1,000 tile layout
•Tile layout in NZTM projection containing relevant information.

The supplied imagery is in terms of New Zealand Transverse Mercator (NZTM) map projection. The products are tiled into NZTopo50 1:1,000 tiles. Please refer to the supplied tile layout shape file for specific details, naming conventions, etc.

Imagery supplied as 10cm pixel resolution (0.1m GSD), 3-band (RGB) uncompressed GeoTIFF. The final spatial accuracy is ±0.2 m @ 95% confidence level in clear open spaces.
