NZ Addresses is the national authoritative dataset for physical addresses in New Zealand.

This dataset contains the street number, street name and suburb of an address, as well as a unique ID and Territorial Authority.

Refer to the NZ Addresses Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

Please note this dataset replaced NZ Street Address in January 2023.

Background

This dataset provides all allocated addresses as advised to Toitū Te Whenua LINZ by Territorial Authorities (TAs). Under the Local Government Act 1974 (section 319) it is the responsibility of the TAs to advise the Surveyor-General at Toitū Te Whenua LINZ of all allocated addresses in their district.

Address data is maintained by Toitū Te Whenua LINZ in the Address Information Management System (AIMS) and Comprehensive Address Data Store (CADS), which are centralised databases for the management of national addresses, including for electoral purposes. This dataset is updated weekly on the LINZ Data Service.

Please read: This is the table for Road Section Geometry, which is part of the set of NZ Roads tables. The Road Section Geometry table stores the linear geometry for the associated road section, or part of the associated road section.

The NZ Roads dataset includes eight data tables and eleven lookup tables. The dataset has been sourced from LINZ’s NZ Roads database, a database for the management of national roads, including those managed for addressing purposes. This set of normalised tables replaces the Landonline: Road Centre Line layer and the Landonline: Road Name and Landonline: Road Name Association tables currently published on LDS.

These centrelines are required to indicate the presence of an authoritative road name. Named centrelines are not intended to represent the exact location of a road formation. Named centrelines do not indicate the presence of legal access.

For a simplified version of the data contained within these tables see NZ Roads (Addressing), which aggregates geometries based on road name, and NZ Roads Subsections (Addressing), which holds the individual geometries.

Please refer to the NZ Roads Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this layer.

Please read: This layer provides linear geometries against which official road names and street addresses can be recorded. Its purpose is also to enable automated meshblock address reports (for electoral and statistical purposes) so as to identify the presence of a road name in meshblocks where street addresses do not exist.

A linear geometry in this layer will consist of the individual road section geometries (as opposed to the NZ Roads (Addressing) layer where these have been aggregated). This layer has been simplified from LINZ’s NZ Roads database, a centralised database for the management of national road data. The comprehensive set of NZ Roads tables is also available.

These road centrelines do not represent actual road formation, nor do they represent legal access. They must not be considered as topographic, cadastral, or legal.

Some road sections have multiple names; in these cases the non-primary road names are held in additional columns against each road section.

This layer contains the core attributes of a road section to support simple searching with locality and territorial authority or provide a road name context for cadastral data views. This layer is a replacement for the NZ Road Centre Line Subsections (Electoral) layer.

The Electoral road and address datasets will be available until May 2017 to allow users further time to transition.

Please refer to the NZ Roads Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this layer.

The NZ Suburbs and Localities (Pilot) dataset describes the spatial extent and name of communities in urban areas (suburbs) and rural areas (localities) to help locate people and properties.  It is based on the NZ Localities dataset which is maintained by Fire and Emergency NZ.

At this stage,  NZ Localities continues to be maintained by Fire and Emergency NZ and published on the LINZ Data Service.  Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) will establish a new dataset to replace NZ Localities in 2023.  NZ Localities will continue to be available for a period of six months to allow for the transition to NZ Suburbs and Localities.  Updates to both datasets will be limited to priority changes required by the Fire and Emergency Communications Centre during this transition.

While creating NZ Suburbs and Localities (Pilot), LINZ has taken the opportunity to restructure the data based on customer feedback.  Our intention is to make the suburbs and localities data easier to understand and use.

The key changes introduced in NZ Suburbs and Localities (Pilot) are:

All suburb and locality names are now held in a single field, to replace the 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st order names
New Zealand Geographic Board official place names have been adopted, including macrons.
Additional name field, to hold alternative common or in-use names
Each name field has a corresponding ascii field to provide the names without macrons or other special characters
Territorial Authority has been added
Small lakes and tarns have been removed
A simple version of the data has been created to removed the related tables.
A complex version of the data has three related tables to provide a one to many relationship for Territorial Authority, Additional Names and Adjacent Names.  The complex version will be published once the data structure for the pilot has been confirmed
Please refer to the NZ Localities Data Migration Guidance for more information.

The AIMS: Addressable Object data table contains an addressable object that the address is assigned to and is part of the AIMS: Street Address. The addressable object could be a parcel, building or unit. Parcel is used as the Addressable Object initially. Over time LINZ will more accurately implement the addressable object, for example using rating unit and building information.
