It is very hard to download the contours in a non-overlapping block because the download tool overestimates the file sizes by a factor of 10. I split them up into 4 parts and they totaled less than 1 GB, not the 7.2GB estimate.

It would be useful to have a North and South Island region clip polygon. A crop box can be drawn around the South, but not the North.

Hi Kim,

We are working hard to try and resolve this issue. Other layers from the property and ownership dataset are also affected. Hopefully on Tuesday we should have a partial fix.

I will look at the option of a North and South Island region crop polygon. In the short term I can't guarantee that this will get the limit below 3gb.

Jeremy Palmer

We have now put a fix it place that should improve the size estimate issue. The FGDB export is now estimated as 1.6GB for the whole country. This is still out by a factor of 2, but will at least allow you to download the dataset in the short term.

What is the reason for the sharp decrease in the number of features from Rev. 7 to Rev. 8? It appears that almost a quarter of the features have been removed and there doesn't appear to be anything in the history notes or metadata that explains this.

Fran McNamara

Hello Daniel,

Thanks for the feedback regarding the lack of explanation in the release notes.

I'll see if we can get the information added, which is that in the data prior to release 8 the contour features were split at each Topo50 sheet edge, and at each NZMS260 map sheet edge(data.linz.govt.nz/#/layer/1579-nzms-260-map-sheets...)

We ran a routine to join the contours at the NZMS260 map edges between the 2 releases which accounts for the differing numbers of features. There shouldn't be any contours missing, just less splits in them.

I hope that explains the situation for you? Please let's know if not.

Hi, there seems to be an issue with this layer, on both my computer and my colleagues computer. The layer is only showing for the North island and the tip of the South Island stopping at about Blenheim. The layer is not showing visually, or when I try to download a cropped area I'm not getting any data for this layer. Could it be my end or is there something silly going on?
Cheers Blair

Hi Blair,
We are in the process of uploading data for the new Topo release. It looks like there was an error with the loading of the contours. We will try rectify the problem and will let you know when this has been completed. Thanks for your message and apologies for any inconvinience.

Douglas Kwan

Hi Blair,
The initial loading error has been fixed. We have now found another error where there are some duplicate IDs on the contours layer. We need to reassign the IDs and reload the layer, and will let you know when this is complete. In the meantime, we have made the version with duplicate IDs available as a temporary solution.

Victoria Lindsay

Hi Blair
The duplicate ID error has now been resolved and the updated layer is online now.

Douglas Kwan

Hi Matthew,
Sorry we thought this was online. It should be downloadable now. Note that this version still has duplicate IDs and will not be change set capable.

Is there any work-around for the 50MB .DWG (CAD) limitation? I use Rhino for topo manipulation and am interested in modifying the full map of NZ from 20m contours to somewhere between 50 and 100m contour lines. With 50MB, I can only do small sections at a time.

As an alternative, does anyone know how to convert the CSV (LINESTRING Z) back into a DWG format? I can script to remove all but 100m contours in CSV, but once done, am unclear on how to get the data back into a useful format!

Cheers, Rebecca

Jeremy Palmer

The DWG file format and the software that uses it is not designed to deal with large amounts of data.

If you can import DXF instead of DWG, then the best option is to download the CSV file, filter it, then convert the modified CSV file to DXF. You can use services like geoconverter.hsr.ch/ to convert CSV to DWG. You could also use other tools like ogr2ogr or QGIS to do this.
