The NZ 50k Tile Index dataset provides a 1:50,000 scale base index for larger scale indexes used for aerial imagery and LiDAR datasets.

This index is different from Topo50 Map Sheets in that there are no overlapping index polygons in this dataset.

This index also expands further into the sea to support future mapping in coastal areas and encompasses all offshore locations up to 50m in depth.

The dataset includes a map sheet code consistent with those from Topo50 Map Sheets, and an attribute for each tile to show whether there is a corresponding Topo50 map sheet with matching location coverage.

This 1:1k tile index is part of a collection of indexes which are referenced to the NZ 1:50k Tile Index dataset.

This dataset defines the Mean High Water coastline of New Zealand and offshore islands at a scale of 1:50,000, and describes the type of coast along the coastline, for example, steep coast, mangrove, or stony shore.

Purpose
The NZ Coastline – Mean High Water dataset is the first step towards improving the national coastline data for New Zealand. LINZ is currently working on a long-term project, “Coastal Mapping” to capture a range of national coastlines derived from LiDAR and bathymetry. This will enable us to generate coastlines, for example, for Mean High Water Springs, Chart Datum and Highest Astronomical Tide. The project is currently focused on capturing LiDAR and bathymetry data, and the timeframe for delivering the new coastlines will be established once the data capture has progressed.

Status
This dataset was created from LINZ Hydrographic and Topographic sources in August 2020 and will not be maintained in this form. This dataset will be replaced by a more accurate dataset in the future once data becomes available through the Coastal Mapping project.

Data sources and preparation
The spatial coastline data (1:50,000 scale) is sourced from the Topo50 series where it is described as a line forming the boundary between the land and sea, defined by mean high water. The source polygon data has been broken up into line segments to enable a coastal classification to be attributed to each segment of coast. Coastal classification data is based on official Electronic Navigational Charts published by the New Zealand Hydrographic Authority. Not all segments have been assigned a coastal category.

Note: This layer has been provided to enable potential users to identify the coverage of photography for Mainland NZ flown on behalf of the Crown between 1936 and 2005.

This layer shows the extent of each photograph taken. The NZ Aerial Survey Footprints, Mainland NZ, (1936-2005) polygons layer shows the extent of each survey undertaken.

The physical Crown Aerial Film Archive is managed for LINZ by WSP New Zealand. Most Crown photographs have been scanned and are available digitally from LINZ upon request. See the Crown Aerial Film Archive historical imagery scanning project for direction on how to access the digitised photos. The photos are not downloadable from the LINZ Data Service.

Photos not yet digitised by be ordered from WSP NZ. You will need to provide the survey, run, and photo number (values in the ‘SURVEY’, 'RUN', and 'PHOTO_NO' attributes) covering your area of interest. WSP NZ will be able to provide information about the cost of providing images in various formats. Contact them at WSP Photo Sales.

The New Zealand Aerial Mapping photo archive has been aquired and added to the Crown Aerial Film Archive. These images will also become available from LINZ once digitised or may be ordered from WSP NZ. Historic Aerial Photos, Survey Footprints, NZAM (1939-2008) shows the extent of each survey undertaken.

When New Zealand Aerial Mapping (NZAM) went into liquidation in September 2014, LINZ took ownership of their historical photo archive and added it to the Crown Aerial Film Archive, making its photos available to the public.

This layer has been provided to enable potential users to identify the coverage of aerial photography for Mainland NZ flown by NZAM for private contract work between 1939 and 2008. These surveys compliment the Crown photos identified in Historic Aerial Photos, Survey Footprints, CROWN (1936-2005).

If you are aware of any inaccuracies, please contact LINZ at topography@linz.govt.nz. The layer shows the approximate bounding box of each aerial survey undertaken.

The physical Crown Aerial Film Archive is managed for LINZ by WSP New Zealand. Most Crown photographs have been scanned and are available digitally from LINZ upon request. See the Crown Aerial Film Archive historical imagery scanning project for direction on how to access the digitised photos. The photos are not downloadable from the LINZ Data Service.

There are a small number of images held in the Archive that have not been referenced in the LDS layers due to incomplete metadata. WSP NZ will be able to let you know if additional photographs are available in your area of interest.

The Topo50 map series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, the Chatham Islands, and offshore islands at 1:50,000 scale.

Along with the paper-based Topo50 map series, digital images of the maps are also publicly available.

Georeferenced raster digital images are provided at a resolution of 300 DPI. Georeferencing allows adjacent maps to be accurately and automatically aligned within GIS systems.

Please be aware of the following:

  • Representation of a road or track does not necessarily indicate public right of access. For access rights, maps and other information, contact the New Zealand Walking Access Commission - www.walkingaccess.govt.nz

  • The Department of Conservation and other agencies should be contacted for the latest information on tracks and back country huts. Closed tracks are defined as being no longer maintained or passable and should not be used.

  • Not all aerial wires, cableways and obstructions that could be hazardous to aircraft are held in the data.

  • Contours and spot elevations in forest and snow areas may be less accurate.

  • Not all pipelines including both underground and above ground are held in the data or shown on the printed maps. For the latest information please contact the utility and infrastructure agencies

  • Permits may be required to visit some sensitive and special islands and areas. Contact the Department of Conservation to see if you need to apply for a permit.

This provides a polygon coastline and islands layer which is based on the Topo250 products. It is a combination of the following layers:

This topographic coastline is the line forming the boundary between the land and sea, defined by mean high water.

Islands from the NZ Island Polygons layer that lie within the NZ Coastline and Chatham Islands areas (i.e. islands in lakes, rivers and estuaries) have been removed.

The GIS workflow to create the layer is:

  1. NZ Coastlines were converted from a polyline to a polygon using a polyline to polygon tool.
  2. The resulting coastal polygon was then used as an input into an erase tool and run against the NZ Island Polygon layer to remove all islands lying within the NZ Mainland and Stewart Island.
  3. This was then merged with the NZ Chatham Is island polygons (Topo, 1:250k) that have had the islands within the main island polygon removed using a merge tool.
  4. Lake Onoke from the NZ Mainland lake polygons (Topo, 1:250k) layer and Te Whanga Lagoon from the NZ Chatham Is lagoon polygons (Topo, 1:250k) layer were then erased from the resultant polygon layer to include these two water bodies in the coastline definition.
