The Place Names Gazetteer contains official and unofficial place names under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB). Official place names are those that have been assigned, altered, adopted, approved, and validated under the NZGB Act 2008 or through other statutes that assign official names, for example, Treaty settlement legislation. Unofficial place names are those that have not been processed under the NZGB Act 2008 or through other relevant statutes.

Data is extracted from Land Information New Zealand’s (LINZ) ‘New Zealand Gazetteer of Official Geographic Names’, which is maintained by the NZGB Secretariat.

Geographical coverage encompasses New Zealand, the Ross Dependency of Antarctica, and the Continental Shelf of New Zealand.

The NZGB has naming jurisdiction over:

  • natural features such as mountains, peaks, valleys, glens, forests, lagoons, swamps, creeks, streams, rivers, fords, lakes, glaciers or ice features, bays, islands or harbours (including man-made features of the same type)

  • railways or railway stations, but not railway features such as marshalling yards, transfer sites, or track point locations

  • places, i.e. cities, towns, villages, sites, areas, or similar places, including suburbs and localities

  • undersea features

  • Crown protected areas

  • Districts and regions (altering only if requested by the local authority)

Each name is provided with a location represented by a point. More complex geometry (e.g lines for rivers or areas for suburbs) is not currently available.

Each geographic feature has one or more place names associated with it. Place names usually comprise two components – ‘specific’, being for the proper noun, and ‘generic’, being a description of the geographic feature type.

Information provided for each place name may include: name; name status (whether official or unofficial); geographic feature type; authority by which an official name became official; district within which the name is located; geographic location; reference information; history/origin/meaning; and additional notes. Not all information is available for all names.

Positional accuracy is generally the same as 1:50K mapping. Information accuracy reflects information at the time of original capture.

This index enables you to identify the freely available bathymetric data held and used by LINZ on its NZ coastal nautical charts. Some of our data holdings date back to the 1930s. The polygons comprising the index show the extent of the survey datasets. The attributes attached to each polygon will enable you to view, amongst other attributes, the age and quality of the bathymetric data.

Please refer to the LINZ Bathymetric Index Data Dictionary for further information about the attributes of this dataset.

The bathymetric data is not downloadable from the LINZ Data Service. Datasets prior to the year 2000 are predominantly available only as georeferenced TIFF images of the original hard copy sounding sheets. Data post-2000 is often available as both georeferenced TIFF images and as digital data files (vector data in plain text format).

Requests for the bathymetric data should be sent to customersupport@linz.govt.nz with “Hydro Bathy Data” in the subject line. Requests must, as a minimum, specify the id, chart_no and serial_no as shown in the attributes attached to each polygon representing the datasets of interest.

Please read: This layer provides linear geometries against which official road names and street addresses can be recorded. Its purpose is also to enable automated meshblock address reports (for electoral and statistical purposes) so as to identify the presence of a road name in meshblocks where street addresses do not exist.

A linear geometry in this layer will consist of the individual road section geometries (as opposed to the NZ Roads (Addressing) layer where these have been aggregated). This layer has been simplified from LINZ’s NZ Roads database, a centralised database for the management of national road data. The comprehensive set of NZ Roads tables is also available.

These road centrelines do not represent actual road formation, nor do they represent legal access. They must not be considered as topographic, cadastral, or legal.

Some road sections have multiple names; in these cases the non-primary road names are held in additional columns against each road section.

This layer contains the core attributes of a road section to support simple searching with locality and territorial authority or provide a road name context for cadastral data views. This layer is a replacement for the NZ Road Centre Line Subsections (Electoral) layer.

The Electoral road and address datasets will be available until May 2017 to allow users further time to transition.

Please read: This is the table for Road Section Geometry, which is part of the set of NZ Roads tables. The Road Section Geometry table stores the linear geometry for the associated road section, or part of the associated road section.

The NZ Roads dataset includes eight data tables and eleven lookup tables. The dataset has been sourced from LINZ’s NZ Roads database, a database for the management of national roads, including those managed for addressing purposes. This set of normalised tables replaces the Landonline: Road Centre Line layer and the Landonline: Road Name and Landonline: Road Name Association tables currently published on LDS.

These centrelines are required to indicate the presence of an authoritative road name. Named centrelines are not intended to represent the exact location of a road formation. Named centrelines do not indicate the presence of legal access.

For a simplified version of the data contained within these tables see NZ Roads (Addressing), which aggregates geometries based on road name, and NZ Roads Subsections (Addressing), which holds the individual geometries.

(1) For electoral, postal, and other purposes the council may allocate a number to any area of land or building or part of a building within its district and may change the number allocated to any such area of land or building.
(2) The council shall comply with any request from a Chief Surveyor to allocate a number to or change the number of any area of land or building or part of a building in its district.
(3) The principal administrative officer shall advise the Chief Surveyor of the land district in which the land or building is situated of the numbers allocated under subsection (1) or subsection (2).


This dataset contains the core components of an address to support simple searching or use of this layer to provide context and is a replacement for the NZ Street Address (Electoral) dataset. This dataset has been sourced from LINZ’s Address Information Management System (AIMS), a centralised database for the management of national addresses, including for electoral purposes.

The existing address and road datasets will be available for 6 months after AIMS go-live to allow users further time to transition.This version will be replacing NZ Street Address (Electoral) dataset.

Please read: The AIMS: Address Position table is part of the set of comprehensive AIMS Address tables.

The Address Position table contains the point location of an address. An address can have multiple point positions. The Addresspositiontype describes the position E.g. centroid, set back from road. In the first instance the Landonline address position will be used the positioning of this is 'unknown'. Additional Address Position data may be captured over time.

The comprehensive address dataset includes eight data tables and nine lookup tables. The dataset has been sourced from LINZ’s Address Information Management System (AIMS), a centralised database for the management of national addresses, including for electoral purposes. This set of normalised tables replaces the single Landonline: Street Address layer currently published on LDS.

This layer provides the extents of the data incorporated into an adjustment which has been completed as a Wide Area Cadastral Adjustment (WACA). These adjustments are undertaken in areas where there is already substantial survey-accurate data, but there are some inconsistencies in the data resulting from small changes to geodetic control coordinates and/or the progressive submission of additional Cadastral Survey Datasets (CSDs). The improvement of coordinates is controlled by a mathematical adjustment process using a Least Squares methodology. The adjustment/integration process results in increased mapping accuracy of surrounding spatial objects (e.g. parcels), the effect of which is some new observations or parcels appear to move. The extent of the change largely depends upon the accuracy of the underlying data. In general, movements will be no more than 10cm, as the WACAs target areas where coordinates already have fairly high spatial accuracy.

This layer provides the extents of the data incorporated into an adjustment which has been completed as part of the Spatial Parcel Improvement (SPI) project. The SPI project aims to improve the accuracy of digital cadastral data in areas (primarily rural) where survey-accurate data does not currently exist. The improvement of coordinates is controlled by a mathematical adjustment process using a Least Squares methodology. The adjustment/integration process results in increased mapping accuracy of surrounding spatial objects (e.g. parcels), the effect of which is some new observations or parcels appear to move. The extent of the change largely depends upon the accuracy of the underlying data. In general, movements will be at least several metres, as the SPI project targets areas where significant movements are expected.

This layer provides all authoritative arc survey observations and is targeted at cadastral surveyors.

Only observations that have been captured in Landonline are available. This includes vectors that were re-captured in the Survey Capture Areas from survey plans lodged prior to Landonline and all survey observations since.

Individual cadastral surveys will commonly re-measure or re-use cadastral lines. Often they will be the same, however as the accuracy capability has increased over time, differences between 'old' and 'new' observations are more likely. Thus all survey observations include the reference to the Survey Plan.
