This polygon layer is provided to assist with identifying the coverage of aerial photography in the Crown Aerial Film Archive. Included surveys were flown on behalf of the Crown and private entities by New Zealand Aerial Mapping between 1936 and 2008.
Note: No historical aerial photos are available for download through the LINZ Data Service. Photos are provided only upon request (see below).
The footprints in this layer are estimations of the extent of each photograph taken. Positional accuracy will vary and not all photos have associated footprints.
The physical Crown Aerial Film Archive is managed for Toitū Te Whenua LINZ by WSP New Zealand. Nearly all Crown surveys have been scanned and are available digitally upon request. See the Crown Aerial Film Archive historical imagery scanning project for directions on how to access the digitised photos.
Photos not yet digitised can be ordered from WSP NZ for a fee. You will need to provide the survey, run, and photo number (values in the ‘SURVEY’, 'RUN', and 'PHOTO_NO' attributes) for each image in your area of interest and WSP will be able to provide a quote for providing the images in various formats. Contact them at WSP Photo Sales.
The Crown Aerial Film Archive is an amalgamation of surveys flown by New Zealand Aerial Mapping for the Crown and surveys flown for private entities. This layer is updated periodically to reflect the latest imagery available for distribution.

The NZ Elevation Survey Index dataset provides an index to all LiDAR derived elevation datasets found on the LINZ Data Service. Each record in the dataset provides both a geometry of the extent of the elevation survey, as well as useful metadata attributes. The extents are derived from the maximum extent of DEM and DSM coverage and consist of full NZTopo50 1k tiles, even where a tile is only partially covered with data. These extents only provide a rough indication of corresponding point cloud coverage which can be quite different for some elevation surveys.
Please refer to the NZ Aerial Surveys Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.
The elevation data referenced by this dataset is available on the LINZ Data Service.

The NZ Imagery Survey Index dataset provides an index to all orthophoto index tiles found on the LINZ Data Service. Each record in the dataset provides both a geometry of the maximum extent of the orthophoto index, as well as all attributes found in each index tile. This dataset therefore provides information to assess orthophoto coverage and metadata across the entire country.
Please refer to the NZ Aerial Surveys Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.
