This polygon layer is provided to assist with identifying the coverage of aerial photography in the Crown Aerial Film Archive. Included surveys were flown on behalf of the Crown and private entities by New Zealand Aerial Mapping between 1936 and 2008.

Note: No historical aerial photos can be directly downloaded from the LINZ Data Service. Photos are provided only upon request (see below).

The footprints in this layer are estimations of the extent of each photograph taken. Positional accuacy will vary and not all photos have associated footprints.

The physical Crown Aerial Film Archive is managed for Toitū Te Whenua LINZ by WSP New Zealand. Nearly all Crown surveys have been scanned and are available digitally upon request. See the Crown Aerial Film Archive historical imagery scanning project for direction on how to access the digitised photos. _ _

Photos not yet digitised can be ordered from WSP NZ for a fee. You will need to provide the survey, run, and photo number (values in the ‘SURVEY’, 'RUN', and 'PHOTO_NO' attributes) for each image in your area of interest. WSP will be able to provide a quote for providing the images in various formats. Contact them at WSP Photo Sales.

The Crown Aerial Film Archive is an amalgamation of surveys flown by New Zealand Aerial Mapping for the Crown and surveys flown for private entities. This layer is updated periodically to reflect the latest imagery digitised and ready for distribution.

This layer identifies critical survey marks which Toitū Te Whenua (Land Information New Zealand) requires to be physically protected.

Thousands of vital survey marks exist in New Zealand. This layer identifies critical survey marks that should not be disturbed or destroyed.
Like utilities such as cables and pipes, survey marks are valuable assets, predominately in the road reserve, with many survey marks set below or at ground level and therefore not highly visible or apparent. They often remain unnoticed until roads or footpaths have been excavated and the survey marks disturbed or destroyed.
Publication of the NZ Protected Survey Marks dataset enables the potential for disturbance or destruction of these valuable survey marks to be assessed, and if needed, the marks protected prior to the commencement of any excavation work.

People involved in construction, from design to the works itself, are responsible for ensuring that survey marks are not disturbed or destroyed. When works have the potential to disturb or destroy existing cadastral and geodetic marks, Toitū Te Whenua needs to be notified so that it can assess whether the marks should be reinstated or replaced. Find out more about looking after the national survey network, and how to contact the Toitū Te Whenua Survey Protection Advisory Service.

Please note there may be other important survey marks not identified on this layer, and that Toitū Te Whenua recommends consultation with a Licensed Cadastral surveyor before any construction or earthworks begin.

If you notice a damaged survey mark, you can report it to Toitū Te Whenua by filling out a form on this website, or by sending feedback via the Geomarks App.

This dataset provides a seamless cloud-free 10m resolution satellite imagery layer of the New Zealand mainland and offshore islands.

The imagery was captured by the European Space Agency Sentinel-2 satellites between December 2016 - December 2017.

Currency This data will be updated once a year, during the term of the 2-year pilot.

Technical specifications It comprises 450 x ortho-rectified RGB GeoTIFF images in NZTM projection, tiled into the LINZ Standard 1:50,000 tile layout.

  • Satellite sensors: ESA Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B
  • Acquisition dates: December 2016 - December 2017
  • Spectral resolution: R, G, B
  • Spatial resolution: 10 metres
  • Radiometric resolution: 8-bits (downsampled from 12-bits)

This is a visual product only. The data has been downsampled from 12-bits to 8-bits, and the original values of the images have been modified for visualisation purposes.

If you require the 12-bit imagery (R, G, B, NIR bands), send your request to eo@linz.govt.nz

This layer provides the current road parcel polygons with associated descriptive data.

The combination of this layer with the other land parcels and hydro parcels equates to the primary parcels layer which provides all current parcels for New Zealand (i.e. excludes historic and pending parcels).

This set of three parcel layers (land, hydro and road) enables easy access to the most common groupings of parcel intents (excluding the non primary parcels).

If you require approved or historic parcels see the All Parcels Layer

This layer has a nominal accuracy of 0.1-1m in urban areas and 1-100m in rural areas. For more detailed information about parcel accuracies please refer to the Survey Boundary Marks layer which contains accuracies for each parcel node.

The originating data for parcel/title associations includes some non-official sources where the official data does not support a link. For more information see

This layer provides the latest bearing (direction) and/or distance for cadastral boundaries.

When a cadastral survey is undertaken the relationship between boundary and non-boundary marks is ascertained or measured.
• This commonly is in the form or a vector (bearing and distance), but occasionally just one component.
• Some relationships are defined as arcs. In this data layer, the arc length is recorded in the distance field and a separate record holds the chord.

Only observations that have been captured in Landonline are available. This includes vectors that were re-captured in the Survey Capture Areas from survey plans lodged prior to Landonline and all survey observations since.

Please read: This is the table for Road Section Geometry, which is part of the set of NZ Roads tables. The Road Section Geometry table stores the linear geometry for the associated road section, or part of the associated road section.

The NZ Roads dataset includes eight data tables and eleven lookup tables. The dataset has been sourced from LINZ’s NZ Roads database, a database for the management of national roads, including those managed for addressing purposes. This set of normalised tables replaces the Landonline: Road Centre Line layer and the Landonline: Road Name and Landonline: Road Name Association tables currently published on LDS.

These centrelines are required to indicate the presence of an authoritative road name. Named centrelines are not intended to represent the exact location of a road formation. Named centrelines do not indicate the presence of legal access.

For a simplified version of the data contained within these tables see NZ Roads (Addressing), which aggregates geometries based on road name, and NZ Roads Subsections (Addressing), which holds the individual geometries.

Please refer to the NZ Roads Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this layer.
