This dataset provides current outlines of buildings within mainland New Zealand captured from the latest aerial imagery.

A building outline is a 2D representation of the roof outline of a building which has been classified from LINZ aerial imagery using a combination of automated and manual processes to extract and refine a building roof outline.

Building outlines observed in aerial imagery larger than or equal to 10 square meters are captured in this dataset, and may include structures such as garages and large sheds.

Data vintage

This dataset shows the most recent set of building outlines extracted from the LINZ aerial imagery available on the LINZ Data Service.

Current coverage includes nearly all regions of New Zealand, except parts of rural Auckland, remote parts of Bay of Plenty, Tasman and the Southern Alps, as well as Fiordland, Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands. This dataset will be updated and expanded as new aerial imagery becomes available.

Since aerial imagery is flown only every few years in each region of the country, building outlines only reflect those buildings observed at the date of this aerial imagery capture, and may not reflect buildings constructed after this time period.

Please refer to the NZ Building Outlines Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

Related building outlines data

NZ Building Outlines (All Sources) - contains all combinations of building outlines from multiple years of imagery that have existed since the beginning of this dataset, and the dates when each building outline existed in the associated aerial imagery.

NZ Building Outlines Lifecycle - is related to the dataset above and stores the relationship between building outlines when one building is split into two or more building outlines, or when multiple building outlines are merged into a single outline.

Please read: This dataset provides linear geometries against which official road names and street addresses can be recorded. Its purpose is also to enable automated meshblock address reports (for electoral and statistical purposes) so as to identify the presence of a road name in meshblocks where street addresses do not exist.

For this dataset (as opposed to the NZ Roads Subsections (Addressing) dataset, individual road section geometries have been aggregated to a single road centreline geometry where those subsections share the same name, and are generally contiguous. Because some roads have multiple names for part of their lengths, some road centreline geometries will duplicate parts of other roads even though there is in reality only one road formation. This dataset has been simplified from LINZ’s NZ Roads dataset, a centralised database for the management of national road data. The comprehensive set of NZ Roads tables is also available.

These road centrelines do not represent actual road formation, nor do they represent legal access. They must not be considered as topographic, cadastral, or legal.

This dataset contains the core attributes of a road to support simple searching or provide a road name context for cadastral data views. Please refer to the NZ Roads Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

The NZ Elevation Survey Index dataset provides an index to all LiDAR derived elevation datasets found on the LINZ Data Service. Each record in the dataset provides both a geometry of the extent of the elevation survey, as well as useful metadata attributes. The extents are derived from the maximum extent of DEM and DSM coverage and consist of full NZTopo50 1k tiles, even where a tile is only partially covered with data. These extents only provide a rough indication of corresponding point cloud coverage which can be quite different for some elevation surveys.

Please refer to the NZ Aerial Surveys Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

This dataset provides river name lines for mainland New Zealand. It is part of a pilot to understand the benefit of combining river names and location, and making these openly available through the LINZ Data Service.

Unnamed rivers are also included in this dataset.

How this data can be used

Together with the NZ River Name Polygons (Pilot) dataset, these are the first openly available datasets with NZ river names attributed to geometry features (lines and polygons). This data can be used for searching for a named river and zooming to its extents, extracting geometries of a named river, creating digital cartographic products displaying river names, and analysing other features against named rivers (e.g. identifying buildings or properties within a specified distance of a particular river).

Data vintage

The river names and extents in this dataset are based on the cartographic text shown on NZ Topo50 maps as of December 2018, and are an approximation and should not be taken as official. Further details are included in the 'Naming Extents Methodology' section in the 'Lineage' of this metadata.
Please refer to the NZ River Name Lines and Polygons (Pilot) Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

Related data

NZ River Name Polygons (Pilot) - contains larger rivers captured as polygon features instead of lines.

We recommend using the two river name datasets with the following NZ Topo50 layers for connectivity and visualisation of inland hydrographic features.

The NZ River Name Lines and Polygons (Pilot) Data Dictionary provides details on how to download the matching time period snapshots of this data.

Please note

  • Official geographic names as listed in the New Zealand Gazetteer of place names must be used in all official documents as per the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008.

  • This pilot dataset is unlikely to be updated, however feedback will be used for future enhancements to LINZ river datasets.

The Fire and Emergency NZ Localities dataset provides suburbs (urban areas) or localities (rural areas) for all New Zealand. The data also includes in-use geographical names and alias names.

The complete dataset is comprised of this spatial dataset, as well as three aspatial auxiliary tables.

NZ Localities are used by Fire and Emergency NZ for locating and responding to emergencies within New Zealand. Coverage includes the New Zealand mainland, Stewart Island/Rakiura and offshore islands, as well as lakes and inland islands.

This dataset is maintained by Fire and Emergency New Zealand and has been made available via the LINZ Data Service as part of LINZ’s key datasets for resilience and climate change programme.

For detailed metadata about this dataset, see the attached Fire and Emergency NZ Localities Data Dictionary below.

Licensing
The Fire and Emergency NZ Localities dataset is available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). However, an additional request has been made to users of this dataset.

Important: This dataset is used by Fire and Emergency New Zealand in the delivery of emergency services and helps in confirming where to send emergency services. As such, the factual accuracy of this data is very important.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand therefore requests that you do not:

  • alter the data in any way that changes its factual accuracy. For example, do not change suburb boundaries and/or naming conventions; and

  • knowingly make any misrepresentations or misstatements about the data or Fire and Emergency New Zealand; and

  • knowingly do anything that adversely reflects on the data, or the reputation of Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

Official names
The Fire and Emergency NZ Localities dataset currently contains many names that are not the official names for those features, suburbs or localities. The New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa) Act 2008, Section 32 requires all official documents to identify names which are not the official place names as recorded in the New Zealand Gazetteer. Please refer to the New Zealand Gazetteer for information on which names are official in this dataset.
